Nova Scotia, Canada, November 15, 2019 – The World ParaVolley, in partnership with Volleyball Canada and Volleyball Nova Scotia, is excited to be hosting its first international sitting volleyball event in February 2020.
The Tokyo 2020 Women’s Final Paralympic Qualification Tournament will be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, from February 25 to 29, 2020. Matches will be held at the Canada Games Centre.
“Bringing this important qualifier to Nova Scotia will provide a lot of exposure for this growing sport, while giving Canada’s women’s sitting volleyball team a home-court advantage as they look to qualify for Tokyo 2020,” said Jason Trepanier, executive director of Volleyball Nova Scotia.
This is the final opportunity for women’s teams to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games sitting volleyball competition. The winner will earn a berth in the Paralympic Games.
“The women’s team has made progress over the last few years, and recently won a bronze medal at the Parapan American Games in Peru,” said Kerry MacDonald, Volleyball Canada’s director, Sport Science, Medicine and Innovation. “It will be very exciting to see the team compete on home soil with so much on the line for all the participating countries.”
The tournament is open to all World ParaVolley member women’s teams that have not already qualified for Tokyo 2020. The tournament field is expected to have a maximum of eight teams with an entry deadline of January 6, 2020.
“On behalf of World ParaVolley, I am very pleased that Volleyball Canada and Volleyball Nova Scotia are able to host the Tokyo 2020 Women’s Final Qualification Tournament for the teams seeking the final place in the 2020 Paralympic Games Sitting Volleyball competition,” said World ParaVolley President Barry Couzner. “I am sure that the organizers will deliver a quality event for the athletes and I wish to thank them for their support.”
Canada’s men’s sitting volleyball team will compete in the Tokyo 2020 Men’s Final Paralympic Qualification Tournament, which will be held March 16 to 21 in Edmond, Oklahoma.
